Cartoons have been disseminated in available media formats for centuries to influence public opinion, encourage support for causes, educate, and generally entertain. The New York State Archives holds examples of cartoons created or compiled by state agencies to serve each of these purposes. From political cartoons cleverly tucked in the margins of mid-nineteenth century canal surveys, to World War I era cartoons encouraging home front support for the war effort, to animated educational features created for public television, all can be found in the collections of the State Archives. This exhibit provides a sampling of cartoons from different time periods, created for a variety of purposes.
