Governor Hugh L. Carey at the unveiling of the portrait of former Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt by J.S. Perskie. Roosevelt’s son, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. (left), was in attendance. The unveiling took place in the Red Room of the Executive Chamber at the Capitol Building, after the painting had been returned from receiving conservation treatment. The man seated behind Governor Carey is historian Arthur Schlesinger, who was the chairman of the State committee planning for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Centennial.
Before becoming the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 44th Governor of New York State, serving in this position from 1929 through 1932.
