Pine plantations at the Axton Demonstration Forest in the Adirondack Mountains. Young red pine plantation in foreground, older Scotch pine plantations in background. The Axton Demonstration Forest was established in 1898, as part of the New York State College of Forestry at Cornell University. The State's first tree nurseries and forest tree plantations were set up at Axton by trained foresters.
