Step Pyramid (Dynasty III) in Sakkara (or Saqqara), Egypt. A man with two donkeys stands in the foreground. Sakkara was the burial ground for people Egyptians from the capital of Memphis, and numerous tombs and burial sites are found there. It was not until the pharaoh Djoser built this step pyramid, however, that massive stone pyramids began to be erected to memorialize the deceased pharaohs. The pyramid consisted of six levels of stone with sloping sides built atop each other.
