License application case file assembled by the New York State Motion Picture Division for the D. W. Griffith film "Birth of a Nation." The file has been presented in three parts due to length. The file contains: eliminations directed to be made to the film by the Motion Picture Division in 1922 for exhibition in New York State; legal documents; licensing documents; transcripts of hearings about the film; newspaper clippings; and correspondence about the film submitted by such entities as the National Council of Negro Women of the United States, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), City-Wide, Inter-Cultural, Inter-Racial Committee for Mount Vernon, NY, and Epoch Producing Corporation. Some of the letters in the file criticize the film as being racist and supportive of the Ku Klux Klan.
