View of a girdled red pine (Pinus resinosa), also called a Norway pine. Girdling involves cutting a groove around the trunk in order to cut off sap flow and kill the tree. In this case, the tree continued to live and grow for nine years even after the proceedure. This image was created by the Forest, Fish and Game Commission to record the state of New York's forests.
