Poster sponsored by New York Governor Mario Cuomo's Interagency Task Force on Immigration Affairs urging undocumented immigrants to seek amnesty by May 4, 1988.

The passage of the Immigration and Reform Control Act in 1986 offered a one-time amnesty for illegal immigrants who had been continuously in the United States since 1982, in return for the imposition of sanctions on employers who knowingly hired undocumented workers. The Spanish text of the poster, in English, reads, "Look to the future without fear -- apply for amnesty now. The amnesty period ends May 4, 1988. For more information call the Suffolk or Nassau County Human Rights Commission."

The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986 and the Immigration Act of 1990 had a far-reaching impact on Latino and other Caribbean immigrants in New York State. The main goal of IRCA was to control and deter illegal immigration to the United States. The law included sanctions for employers who knowingly hired undocumented workers, increased enforcement at US borders, and allowed legalization of some immigrants who had resided in the US continuously since 1982.
