Title page of the 1845 census for the Tuscarora Reservation. This document forms part of the 1845 schedules of the enumeration of the population of the Tuscarora Indian Reservation, which is part of the set of schedules for all Indian Reservations in New York State (except Long Island). These schedules were compiled under the direction of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, a state appointed census taker and marshall for all of the reservations except the St. Regis. The schedules are the printed forms used for the general state census taken in 1845. The data collected for the reservations is largely the same with additional data categories added [except St. Regis]. These categories were intended to help indicate the extent to which reservation residents had adopted European and American culture and economics e.g. number of plows, value obtained from hunting, lands rented out, level of education, form of employment, and ?statistics of morality.? Schedules are present for the following reservations (in order of binding): Oneida, Onondaga, Tuscarora, Seneca of Buffalo Creek, Seneca of Cattaragus, Cayuga of Cattaragus, Seneca of Alleghany, Tonawanda, and the St. Regis Mohawk.
