Civil War. Letter from a Colonel to Future President Gen. Chester A. Arthur.
Writing in 1861 on the distinctive letterhead of the 6th New York Volunteers. Col. James C. Pickney asks Quartermaster General Chester Alan Arthur (a future President of the United States) to forward to him one hundred gray uniforms for his regiment.

During the early months of the war, both sides wore a variety of uniforms: some Confederates actually wore blue, and some Union soldiers gray. Not surprisingly, this resulted in considerable confusion during the war's first major battle at Bull Run in July 1861.
