The Morris-Jumel Mansion in New York City. The mansion is the oldest house in the borough of Manhattan. It was built in 1765 by Roger Morris, and was used as a temporary military headquarters by George Washington between September 14 and October 20, 1776. After the Battle of Harlem Heights, the mansion became the headquarters of British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton, and the Hessian commander Baron Wilhelm von Knyphausen. The house was purchased by Stephen and Eliza Jumel in 1810, and by New York City in 1903.
