Portrait of Gerrit Smith over the mantle of the Gerrit Smith Estate in Peterboro, New York. Smith was a supporter of the abolition and temperance movements during the 1820s. His estate served as a meeting place for abolitionists and also as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
