Aerial photograph, no. 3 in a sequence, taken by plane flying across lower Manhattan southeast along west side of lower Manhattan more than one month after the September 11 terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center, on October 21, 2001. By this point, most of the fires had been put out, and debris removal had begun.
The gap at top center was formerly occupied by 7 World Trade Center. By mid-October, most of the building's debris had been taken to a special processing facility at the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island. The small structure immediately to the north of 7 World Trade Center is Fiterman Hall, a Borough of Manhattan Community College building that was irreparably damaged when 7 World Trade Center collapsed.
Magnify this image to see trucks carrying World Trade Center debris on West Street toward center right. The white blotch toward top right is the result of light reflected from the large white tent housing the Fire Department of New York staging area at West and Vesey Streets.
