Aerial photograph, no. 4 in a sequence, taken by plane flying across Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island about a week after the September 11 terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center, on September 19, 2001. On September 11, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ordered that debris removed from the World Trade Center site be transported to the recently closed landfill at Fresh Kills.

The landfill's West Mound, on which World Trade Center debris was processed, is visible toward bottom center of this image. At the time this photograph was taken, investigators were sorting the debris by hand in the open air. In the weeks that followed, climate-controlled sorting and respite facilities were built at the site and the sorting process was mechanized.
