Aerial photograph, no. 3 in a sequence, taken by plane flying across lower Manhattan northwest along west side of lower Manhattan a few days after the September 11 terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center, on September 15, 2001. On this date, parts of the site were still on fire.
The wide thoroughfare running from center top to bottom right is West Street. To its left is the southern half of Battery Park City. On September 11, airplane parts punctured several buildings in the Gateway Plaza section of the neighborhood, which is visible at top left. The area was designated part of the World Trade Center crime scene, and residents were not allowed to return for months after the attack.
