[Aerial photograph, flying across lower Manhattan, 09/15/2001]
Aerial photograph, no. 3 in a sequence, taken by plane flying across lower Manhattan from southeast to northwest a few days after the September 11 terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center, on September 15, 2001. On this date, parts of the site were still on fire.

The building slightly above center is 6 World Trade Center (U.S. Customs House); note the large, dark hole in its roof. The footprint of 1 World Trade Center (North Tower) is immediately to its right. The footprint of 2 World Trade Center (South Tower) is immediately to the right and slightly below the footprint of 1 World Trade Center. Both footprints are obscured by plumes of smoke.

Magnify the center of this image to view bucket brigades of emergency personnel removing debris from the site.
