Thermal mosaic of World Trade Center site taken on September 16, 2001, a few days after the September 11 terrorist attack upon the site. The thermal images captured data that firefighters used to plan their work and assess the effectiveness of different firefighting techniques. Many fires were still burning when these images were taken; the lighter the shade of gray, the higher the temperature.
This image shows thermal conditions at the World Trade Center site as seen from the north. The footprint of 1 World Trade Center is slightly below and to the right of center, and the footprint of 2 World Trade Center is slightly above and to the left of center. The L-shaped building at bottom left is 5 World Trade Center, and 4 World Trade Center is immediately above it. The domes at right are part of the adjacent World Financial Center complex.
