Thanksgiving proclamation by Governor Horatio Seymour, 1863. As Thanksgiving was not a federal holiday at the time, Seymour declared Thursday, November 26 a state holiday. The governor stated that the ongoing Civil War was a reason for the state's citizens to reflect and give thanks.
