World War I army service card of Henry Lincoln Johnson. Johnson volunteered in June 1917 and enlisted in the 369th infantry, an all-black regiment nicknamed the "Harlem Hellfighters," in which he served for the duration of the war. He was the first American in the war to be awarded the French Croix de Guerre with a Gold Palm for valor in battle.
