As his service record indicates, Horace Pippin was one of the African American soldiers who fought in the famous 369th Regiment of the 93rd Division - the Harlem Hellfighters. 

Although the card does not state the details of Pippin's wounds received in action, it does note that they were severe. In fact, Pippin's wounds considerably disabled his right arm. Nonetheless, Horace Pippin returned from the war and overcame the limitations of his wounds to gain renown as a famous folk artist.
