New York Caledonia. Seth Green stripping a lake trout
Seth Greene stripping a Lake Trout in Caledonia. This trout hatchery, established in 1870, was the first built by the State. Seth Greene is called the "Father of Fish Culture" in New York. He developed artificial shad propagation and invented the shad-hatching box in 1867. He first successfully, artificially reproduced whitefish and was acknowledged as one of the leaders in fish culture. From 1870 until his death in 1888 he was superintendent of the State Hatchery at Caledonia. Lantern slide is cracked.
