The Sicilian and Hannibalian Wars are more commonly known as the First and Second Punic Wars, fought between the Roman Republic and the empire of Carthage in North Africa. The First Punic War erupted over the governing of Sicily, which had been under the control of Greece and Carthage. Although both Carthage and Rome inflicted massive military, and economic, damage on one another, Rome ultimately prevailed after the defeat of Carthage’s great general Hannibal Barca, n.d.
