Naturalization papers of German immigrant Alexander Rudolph, 1840. The document was filed in the Chancery Court in Rochester, New York. It contained Rudolph's declaration of intent to become a citizen, his oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, notation that he had resided in the U.S. (and specifically in New York) for five years, and his renouncement of allegiance to Germany. The document was a printed form with handwritten notations.
